Gastric Carcinoma: A Review on Epidemiology, Current Surgical and Chemotherapeutic Options

چکیده
Malignancies associated with the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract are reported to be ex‐ tremely lethal. Most patients with gastric cancer (GC) in the United States are symptomatic and already have complex untreatable disease at the time of presentation. GC in general, is a senile malignancy (cancer of the aged) and is reportedly twice as common in blacks as in whites. Routine screening is not extensively performed, except in countries, which have a very high incidence of GC, such as Japan, Venezuela, and Chile. The three most common primary malignant gastric neoplasms are adenocarcinoma (95%), lymphoma (4%), and ma‐ lignant GIST (Gastrointestinal stromal tumor)(1%). Fortunately, dedicated research into its pathogenesis and detection of new risk factors, treatment, and advanced endoscopic techni‐ ques have led to early diagnosis of GC in the modern era.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the 5th commonest malignancy worldwide and is the third most common cause of cancer-related death. The prevalence is different in the world. The ability to predict patients at higher risk of recurrence and with a poor prognosis would help to guide surgical and chemotherapeutic treatment according to individual risk. As understanding of hepatocarcinogenesi...

Ovarian small cell carcinoma is a rare and highly malignant tumor with poor prognosis. It usually presents in younger females with features of hypercalcemia. The exact histogenesis of the tumor is unclear and it may present as an undifferentiated tumor. In such cases, immunohistochemistry (IHC) plays an important role to confirm the diagnosis. Limited treatment options are available and mainly ...

Carcinoma of the stomach is one of the major prevalent and principal causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Current advancement in technology has improved the understanding of the pathogenesis and pathology of gastric cancers (GC).
